analytical, yet favourable, presentation of the author’s adopted nation,

Syd Hayes' second book ‘Tales of a Bush
Teacher’ is a memoir of his time in the tiny settlement of Girilambone,
in outback western New South Wales. After World War 2, Syd migrated from
England to Australia and retrained as a teacher. His very first posting
was to a one teacher school, today this would be considered a steep
learning curve, but that was normal in the 1950s. Syd and family had to
adjust to the isolation of an outback community and the vastness of
Australia.Teaching the children was only a small part of his challenge,
as in the 1950s, teacher’s wages were so low that Syd had to find ways
to supplement hisincome. He learnt all aspects of farming and railway
work. Syd’s handling of all these challenges; bring humour and insight
into a way of life that is long gone, but fondly remembered. An
enjoyable read.
